The Marks of a Devotee

Doha 48: The Marks of a Devotee

Rama describes his nature and the devotee who ties every attachment to his feet.

Verse 48.1

sunahu sakhā nija kahaum̐ subhāū jāna bhusuṁḍi saṁbhu girijāū jauṁ nara hoi charāchara drohī āvai sabhaya sarana taki mohī

Translation

"Listen, friend, I will tell you my nature, which Bhushundi, Shambhu and Girija know: if a man who has wronged every creature comes to me in fear, looking for refuge,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Kakabhushundi, the crow-sage, and Shiva and Parvati are three of the four narrators within the Ramcharitmanas's layered frame (the fourth pair is Yajnavalkya and Bharadvaja). Rama cites them as witnesses to his nature.

Verse 48.2

taji mada moha kapaṭa chhala nānā karaum̐ sadya tehi sādhu samānā jananī janaka baṁdhu suta dārā tanu dhanu bhavana suhṛida parivārā

Translation

"and gives up pride, delusion, deceit and trickery of every kind, I at once make him like a saint. Mother, father, brother, son, wife, body, wealth, home, friends and family:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

saba kai mamatā tāga baṭorī mama pada manahi bām̐dha bari ḍorī samadarasī ichchhā kachhu nāhīṁ haraṣha soka bhaya nahiṁ mana māhīṁ

Translation

"one who gathers the threads of attachment to all these, twists them into a rope and ties his mind with it to my feet; who looks on all alike, has no desires, and has no joy, grief or fear in his mind,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

A lovely image of devotion. Rama does not ask a devotee to cut every attachment; he asks for the threads to be gathered up, twisted into one rope and tied to his feet, so the same love is redirected.

Verse 48.4

asa sajjana mama ura basa kaiseṁ lobhī hṛidayam̐ basai dhanu jaiseṁ tumha sārikhe saṁta priya moreṁ dharaum̐ deha nahiṁ āna nihoreṁ

Translation

"such a good soul lives in my heart as wealth lives in a miser's heart. Saints like you are dear to me; I take a body for no other reason.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Rama compares his love for the devotee to a miser's love of money: constant, jealous and never forgotten. He takes a body (avatar) for such devotees.

Verse 48.5

saguna upāsaka parahita nirata nīti dṛiṛha nema te nara prāna samāna mama jinha keṁ dvija pada prema

Translation

"Those who worship God with form, who are devoted to others' good, firm in right conduct and discipline, and who love the feet of the twice-born, are as dear to me as my own life."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
