The Ocean Surrenders

Doha 59: The Ocean Surrenders

The ocean begs forgiveness, explains the inert nature of the elements, and offers to obey.

Verse 59.1

सभय सिंधु गहि पद प्रभु केरे। छमहु नाथ सब अवगुन मेरे॥ गगन समीर अनल जल धरनी। इन्ह कइ नाथ सहज जड़ करनी॥ १ ॥

sabhaya siṁdhu gahi pada prabhu kere chhamahu nātha saba avaguna mere gagana samīra anala jala dharanī inha kai nātha sahaja jaṛa karanī

Translation

Trembling, the ocean clasped the Lord's feet: "Master, forgive all my faults. Sky, wind, fire, water and earth, master, all act dully by nature.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

डरे हुए समुद्र ने प्रभु के चरण पकड़कर कहा, "हे नाथ! मेरे सब अवगुण क्षमा कीजिए। हे नाथ! आकाश, वायु, अग्नि, जल और पृथ्वी, इन सबकी करनी स्वभाव से ही जड़ है।

Commentary

The ocean offers a philosophical defence: the five elements are inert matter (jada) that can only follow their nature. It is asking to be forgiven for not moving when Rama asked.

Verse 59.2

तव प्रेरित मायाँ उपजाए। सृष्टि हेतु सब ग्रंथनि गाए॥ प्रभु आयसु जेहि कहँ जस अहई। सो तेहि भाँति रहें सुख लहई॥ २ ॥

tava prerita māyām̐ upajāe sṛiṣhṭi hetu saba graṁthani gāe prabhu āyasu jehi kaham̐ jasa ahaī so tehi bhām̐ti raheṁ sukha lahaī

Translation

"All the scriptures sing that Maya, prompted by you, produced them for the sake of creation. Whoever abides in the state your command sets for him lives in happiness.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

prabhu bhala kīnha mohi sikha dīnhīṁ marajādā puni tumharī kīnhīṁ ḍhola gavām̐ra sūdra pasu nārī sakala tāṛanā ke adhikārī

Translation

"Lord, you did well to teach me a lesson, yet my limits too were set by you. The drum, the rustic, the shudra, the beast and the woman: all these are fit for tadana."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"प्रभु ने अच्छा किया जो मुझे शिक्षा दी, पर मेरी मर्यादा भी आपकी ही बनाई हुई है। ढोल, गँवार, शूद्र, पशु और स्त्री, ये सब ताड़ना के अधिकारी हैं।"

Commentary

This is the most debated line in the Ramcharitmanas. Three points are worth knowing. First, it is spoken by the ocean, a character who has just been humbled and is excusing his own dullness, not by Rama or by Tulsidas in his own voice. Second, the meaning of tadana is disputed: the common reading is "beating" or "punishment," while others read it as "to be watched over" or "to be understood," and some editions note textual variants. Third, many readers and teachers today find the line unacceptable as it is commonly understood. Our translation leaves the word untranslated rather than settle a real debate one way.

Verse 59.4

प्रभु प्रताप मैं जाब सुखाई। उतरिहि कटकु न मोरि बड़ाई॥ प्रभु अग्या अपेल श्रुति गाई। करौं सो बेगि जो तुम्हहि सोहाई॥ ४ ॥

prabhu pratāpa maiṁ jāba sukhāī utarihi kaṭaku na mori baṛāī prabhu agyā apela śhruti gāī karauṁ so begi jo tumhahi sohāī

Translation

"By the Lord's power I will dry up and the army will cross, but that would bring me no honour. Yet the Vedas sing that the Lord's command cannot be set aside; I will quickly do whatever pleases you."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sunata binīta bachana ati kaha kṛipāla musukāi jehi bidhi utarai kapi kaṭaku tāta so kahahu upāi

Translation

Hearing these very humble words, the compassionate one smiled and said, "Dear friend, tell us the way the monkey army can cross."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

अत्यंत विनीत वचन सुनकर कृपालु प्रभु मुस्कुराकर बोले, "हे तात! जिस प्रकार वानर सेना पार उतरे, वह उपाय बताओ।"
