The March to the Sea

Doha 35: The March to the Sea

The earth shakes as the army marches; omens favour Sita and threaten Ravana.

Verse 35.1

prabhu pada paṁkaja nāvahiṁ sīsā garjahiṁ bhālu mahābala kīsā dekhī rāma sakala kapi senā chitai kṛipā kari rājiva nainā

Translation

They bow their heads at the Lord's lotus feet; the mighty bears and monkeys roar. Rama looked at the whole monkey army, gazing on it with grace in his lotus eyes.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

rāma kṛipā bala pāi kapiṁdā bhae pachchhajuta manahum̐ giriṁdā haraṣhi rāma taba kīnha payānā saguna bhae suṁdara subha nānā

Translation

Strengthened by Rama's grace, the great monkeys became like mountains with wings. Then Rama joyfully set out, and many fine auspicious omens appeared.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

In Puranic lore mountains once had wings until Indra clipped them. Rama's glance restores those wings to the monkey army.

Verse 35.3

jāsu sakala maṁgalamaya kītī tāsu payāna saguna yaha nītī prabhu payāna jānā baidehīṁ pharaki bāma am̐ga janu kahi dehīṁ

Translation

When the one whose fame is all auspiciousness sets out, good omens are only fitting. Vaidehi knew of the Lord's departure; her left limbs throbbed as if to tell her.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

In traditional belief, a throbbing on the left side of the body is a good omen for a woman and a bad one for a man. The next verse makes the most of this.

Verse 35.4

joi joi saguna jānakihi hoī asaguna bhayau rāvanahiṁ soī chalā kaṭaku ko baranaiṁ pārā garjahiṁ bānara bhālu apārā

Translation

Every good omen that came to Janaki became a bad omen for Ravana. The army marched; who could describe it? The countless monkeys and bears roared.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

nakha āyudha giri pādapadhārī chale gagana mahi ichchhāchārī keharināda bhālu kapi karahīṁ ḍagamagāhiṁ diggaja chikkarahīṁ

Translation

With claws for weapons and carrying mountains and trees, going by sky or by land as they pleased, the bears and monkeys roared like lions. The elephants of the directions staggered and trumpeted.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

chikkarahiṁ diggaja ḍola mahi giri lola sāgara kharabhare mana haraṣha sabha gaṁdharba sura muni nāga kiṁnara dukha ṭare kaṭakaṭahiṁ markaṭa bikaṭa bhaṭa bahu koṭi koṭinha dhāvahīṁ jaya rāma prabala pratāpa kosalanātha guna gana gāvahīṁ

Translation

The elephants of the directions trumpet, the earth shakes, mountains sway and the oceans churn. Gandharvas, gods, sages, nagas and kinnaras are glad at heart that their sorrows are over. Fearsome monkey warriors gnash their teeth and charge by the million, singing "Victory to Rama!" and the praises of the mighty Lord of Kosala.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The second chhand passage of the kand marks the army's march, with the same grand metre that described Lanka in doha 3.

Verse 35.7

sahi saka na bhāra udāra ahipati bāra bārahiṁ mohaī gaha dasana puni puni kamaṭha pṛiṣhṭha kaṭhora so kimi sohaī raghubīra ruchira prayāna prasthiti jāni parama suhāvanī janu kamaṭha kharpara sarparāja so likhata abichala pāvanī

Translation

The great serpent Shesha cannot bear the weight and faints again and again, and again and again grips with his teeth the hard back of the Tortoise; how splendid that looks! It is as if, knowing Raghubir's lovely march to be most auspicious, the king of serpents were writing its sacred, unfading record on the Tortoise's shell.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

In Hindu cosmology the earth rests on the serpent Shesha, who in turn rests on the cosmic Tortoise (Kurma). Tulsidas turns Shesha's strain into a playful image: his tooth-marks on the shell are an inscription recording Rama's march for ever.

Verse 35.8

ehi bidhi jāi kṛipānidhi utare sāgara tīra jaham̐ taham̐ lāge khāna phala bhālu bipula kapi bīra

Translation

In this way the Treasury of Mercy went and camped on the seashore, and here and there the many monkey and bear heroes began eating fruit.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
