An aarti that asks for a clear mind
The last stanza sets the tone: sat marag par hamen chalao, jo hai sukhdata, "lead us on the true path, the one that truly gives happiness". It is the Gayatri Mantra's own prayer, "may she inspire our understanding", put into simple Hindi. The aarti is sung across north India and especially at centres of the All World Gayatri Pariwar, the movement that made Gayatri worship open to all; the text here follows the version printed in the Pariwar's own Gayatri Chalisa booklet.
What the stanzas praise
- The primordial power (1–3): she is Adi Shakti, invisible and stainless, who creates and sustains the world and takes away sorrow, fear, strife, poverty and despair. She is Brahman in form, protector of those who bow, mother who upholds the world.
- Pure and unchanging (3): sinless, unborn, a mass of bliss, without change, remover of sin, unshakeable, spotless, imperishable.
- Every sacred thing (4–6): she is the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu, Sat-Chit-Ananda, the Ganga and the Gita; the eternal power of Savitr, the sun, which is why she is also Savitri; the inspirer of the four Vedas and the glory of Om. She is the kundalini, rising through the sushumna to the thousand-petalled lotus.
- Every goddess (6): Svaha and Svadha, Shachi, Brahmani, Radha, Rudrani, Shatarupa, Vani, Vidya and Kamala. Like the Gayatri Stotram, the aarti sees all goddesses as her forms.
- The child's plea (7–10): "Mother, we are poor and helpless, surrounded by sorrow; though we are crooked, deceitful, bad sons, we are still your children." Then the prayer that sums it all up (9): "take away lust, anger, pride, greed, hypocrisy, ill will and hatred; make our intellect pure, our heart sinless and our mind holy."
When to sing it
Sing it at the end of morning or evening Gayatri worship: after Gayatri Mantra japa, the Gayatri Stotram and the Gayatri Chalisa. It is central on Gayatri Jayanti, at the close of a Gayatri anushthana or havan, and through Navratri. Wave a ghee lamp before her picture as you sing, and offer the flame to everyone at the end.
