The Holy Pindis

According to the Shrine Board, the Trikuta mountain is one at the base but has three peaks, and so is the Mother's revelation in the cave: a single rock that rises into three heads, the Holy Pindis. Each differs in colour and texture, and together they are worshipped as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. There is no carved idol. Legend tells of Vaishnavi, a devotee-girl of Vishnu who meditated here, and of Bhairon Nath, who pursued her and was slain at the mouth of the cave; on his repentance she granted that no pilgrimage is complete without visiting his shrine too.

Registration and the RFID card

  • Registration is free and is done only by the Shrine Board: online, or at the Yatri Registration Counters in Katra and Jammu.
  • Each pilgrim is photographed and given an RFID Yatra Access Card. You must cross the Banganga checkpoint within six hours of the card being issued, or it is cancelled and you must register again.
  • Pilgrims without the card are turned back at Banganga.

The route

  • On foot: from Katra via Banganga, Charan Paduka and Ardhkuwari to the Bhawan, about 13 km. A newer route from Ardhkuwari via Himkoti has a gentler gradient and battery cars.
  • Ardhkuwari: halfway up, the Garbh Joon cave where Mata is said to have meditated for nine months; entry is by token and the wait can be long.
  • Ponies, palkis and porters are available at fixed rates.
  • Helicopter: from Katra to Sanjichhat, about 2.5 km from the Bhawan. Book only on the official website.

Darshan and the Atka Aarti

The Atka Aarti is performed twice a day, just before sunrise and immediately after sunset. The priests first perform the aarti inside the sanctum, then bring the thaal outside the cave for the seated devotees, and distribute prasad and charanamrit. The whole ritual takes about two hours, during which darshan is suspended. Seats at the Atka Aarti are limited and booked through the Shrine Board.

Bhairon temple and the ropeway

By tradition the yatra ends with darshan at the Bhairon Nath temple, a further climb above the Bhawan. An aerial ropeway runs from the Bhawan to Bhairon temple; the Shrine Board lists its operating hours as 9 am to 5 pm.

How to reach Katra

  • By train: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station has direct trains from Delhi and other cities.
  • By air: Jammu airport, about 50 km away; taxis and buses run to Katra.
  • By road: frequent buses from Jammu.

Practical tips

  • Many pilgrims trek at night to avoid the heat; the path is lit and open round the clock.
  • Carry ID, a light jacket and rain gear; it is cold at the Bhawan, especially in winter.
  • Phones and bags must be deposited in the cloak rooms before darshan; the Shrine Board provides them free.
  • Navratri, New Year and summer holidays bring huge crowds; book helicopter and rooms early.
  • Sing Jai Vaishnavi Mata or read the Vaishno Devi Chalisa on the way.
