Durga Saptashati — Chapter 2, Verse 68

Mahishasura Sainya Vadha

स च सिंहो महानादमुत्सृजन्धुतकेसरः । शरीरेभ्योऽमरारीणामसूनिव विचिन्वति ॥ ६८ ॥

sa cha siṁho mahānādamutsṛijandhutakesaraḥ śharīrebhyo’marārīṇāmasūniva vichinvati

Translation

And that lion, roaring loudly and shaking his mane, seemed to pluck the very lives from the bodies of the enemies of the gods.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

और वह सिंह भी अयाल हिलाते हुए ज़ोर से गर्जना करता हुआ मानो देवशत्रुओं के शरीरों से उनके प्राण चुन रहा था।

Commentary

The lion "picking out" lives is a vivid image. The lion is often seen as a symbol of the Devi's own fierce energy.
