दुर्गा बीज मंत्र: ॐ दुं दुर्गायै नमः॥ अष्टाक्षर रूप: ॐ ह्रीं दुं दुर्गायै नमः॥ एकाक्षरी बीज: दुं॥
Transliteration
Durga beej mantra: Om Dum Durgayai Namah. Eight-syllable form: Om Hreem Dum Durgayai Namah. Single-syllable bija: Dum.
What the mantra means
ॐ दुं दुर्गायै नमः — "Om, Dum, salutations to Durga." Dum (दुं) is Durga's own seed syllable, formed, like most bijas, from the first sound of her name with the nasal anusvara. Durgayai is "to Durga" and namah "I bow". It is the shortest complete mantra of the goddess, and many people use it as their everyday Durga japa.
Her name tells why she is called upon: Durga is "the one who is difficult to approach" — the fortress no enemy can take — and also "the one who carries across durgati", misfortune. The Devi Mahatmya says she took her name from killing the demon Durgama.
The longer forms
- ॐ ह्रीं दुं दुर्गायै नमः — the eight-syllable form, adding Hreem, the bija of Bhuvaneshwari and of Shakti in general.
- दुं — the single-syllable bija on its own, used by practitioners initiated into it.
Do not confuse this with the Navarna mantra, "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche", the nine-syllable mantra of the Durga Saptashati tradition addressed to Chamunda. Both are Durga mantras; the Navarna is traditionally taken with initiation, while "Om Dum Durgayai Namah" is commonly chanted by everyone.
How to chant it in Navratri
- On the first day, after kalash sthapana, sit before Durga's image facing east or north, with a red cloth on the altar and a ghee lamp (an akhand jyoti if your family keeps one).
- Offer red flowers — hibiscus is her favourite — sindoor, akshat and a little sweet.
- Chant one or more malas of 108 daily for the nine days, keeping the same count each day. A rudraksha or red sandalwood mala is traditional.
- On Ashtami or Navami, finish with kanya pujan and her aarti, Jai Ambe Gauri.
Outside Navratri, Tuesdays and Fridays and the monthly Durga Ashtami are the usual days. See our Shardiya Navratri 2026 dates and muhurat.
Benefits traditionally associated with it
- Protection and fearlessness — Durga as the fortress.
- Removal of obstacles and the courage to face difficult situations.
- Strength of mind during illness, conflict or legal trouble; traditionally suggested in jyotish when Rahu is troubling.
