Durga Saptashati — Chapter 13, Verse 10

Boons to Suratha and the Merchant

स च वैश्यस्तपस्तेपे देवीसूक्तं परं जपन् । तौ तस्मिन् पुलिने देव्याः कृत्वा मूर्तिं महीमयीम् ॥ १० ॥

sa cha vaiśhyastapastepe devīsūktaṁ paraṁ japan tau tasmin puline devyāḥ kṛitvā mūrtiṁ mahīmayīm

Translation

And the merchant practised austerities, reciting the supreme Devi Sukta. The two of them, making an earthen image of the Devi on that river bank,

Commentary

Two practices for Durga Puja come from this verse: recitation of the Devi Sukta and worship of an earthen image (murti) on a river bank. The clay images of Durga Puja, later immersed in water, follow this pattern. Verses 10–11 form one sentence.
