Durga Saptashati — Chapter 1, Verse 74

Madhu-Kaitabha Vadha

सुधा त्वमक्षरे नित्ये त्रिधा मात्रात्मिका स्थिता । अर्धमात्रास्थिता नित्या यानुच्चार्या विशेषतः ॥ ७४ ॥

sudhā tvamakṣhare nitye tridhā mātrātmikā sthitā ardhamātrāsthitā nityā yānuchchāryā viśheṣhataḥ

Translation

You are nectar; in the eternal imperishable syllable you abide as its threefold measure, and you are the eternal half-measure that cannot be specially pronounced.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

तुम्हीं सुधा हो; नित्य अक्षर (प्रणव) में तुम तीन मात्राओं के रूप में स्थित हो, और वह नित्य अर्धमात्रा भी तुम्हीं हो जिसका विशेष उच्चारण नहीं किया जा सकता।

Commentary

Om has three measures, A, U and M, plus the silent "half measure" (ardhamatra) that follows. Brahma places the Devi in all of them, and especially in the silence beyond sound.
