Durga Saptashati — Chapter 1, Verse 52

Madhu-Kaitabha Vadha

कणमोक्षादृतान्मोहात्पीड्यमानानपि क्षुधा । मानुषा मनुजव्याघ्र साभिलाषाः सुतान् प्रति ॥ ५२ ॥

kaṇamokṣhādṛitānmohātpīḍyamānānapi kṣhudhā mānuṣhā manujavyāghra sābhilāṣhāḥ sutān prati

Translation

tormented by hunger themselves, they lovingly drop grain into the beaks of their young, out of delusion. And humans, O tiger among men, long for sons

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

स्वयं भूख से पीड़ित होते हुए भी वे मोहवश अपने बच्चों की चोंच में अन्न के दाने डालते हैं। और हे नरश्रेष्ठ! मनुष्य पुत्रों की अभिलाषा करते हैं,

Commentary

The image is tender, not mocking. The bird goes hungry to feed its chicks: love and moha look the same from outside. The point is that this pull is built into living beings.
