Durga Saptashati — Chapter 1, Verse 5

Madhu-Kaitabha Vadha

तस्य पालयतः सम्यक् प्रजाः पुत्रानिवौरसान् । बभूवुः शत्रवो भूपाः कोलाविध्वंसिनस्तदा ॥ ५ ॥

tasya pālayataḥ samyak prajāḥ putrānivaurasān babhūvuḥ śhatravo bhūpāḥ kolāvidhvaṁsinastadā

Translation

Though he protected his subjects well, as if they were his own sons, kings of the Kolavidhvamsi clan rose against him.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

वे अपनी प्रजा का अपने औरस पुत्रों की तरह भली भाँति पालन करते थे, फिर भी उस समय कोलाविध्वंसी राजा उनके शत्रु बन गए।

Commentary

The story begins with a good king losing everything through no fault of his own. That is deliberate. The Saptashati is not about punishment for wrongdoing but about how a person meets misfortune.
