Durga Saptashati — Chapter 7, Verse 27

Chanda-Munda Vadha

यस्माच्चण्डं च मुण्डं च गृहीत्वा त्वमुपागता । चामुण्डेति ततो लोके ख्याता देवि भविष्यसि ॥ २७ ॥

yasmāchchaṇḍaṁ cha muṇḍaṁ cha gṛihītvā tvamupāgatā chāmuṇḍeti tato loke khyātā devi bhaviṣhyasi

Translation

"Because you have brought Chanda and Munda and come to me, you shall be famous in the world, O Devi, as Chamunda."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"क्योंकि तुम चण्ड और मुण्ड को लेकर मेरे पास आई हो, इसलिए हे देवि! संसार में तुम "चामुण्डा" नाम से विख्यात होगी।"

Commentary

The origin of the name Chamunda, from Chanda + Munda. Chamunda is worshipped widely, especially in fierce forms, and the name appears in the Navarna mantra recited with the Saptashati ("aim hrim klim chamundayai vicche").
