Durga Saptashati — Chapter 7, Verse 24

Chanda-Munda Vadha

मया तवात्रोपहृतौ चण्डमुण्डौ महापशू । युद्धयज्ञे स्वयं शुम्भं निशुम्भं च हनिष्यसि ॥ २४ ॥

mayā tavātropahṛitau chaṇḍamuṇḍau mahāpaśhū yuddhayajñe svayaṁ śhumbhaṁ niśhumbhaṁ cha haniṣhyasi

Translation

"I have brought you Chanda and Munda, these two great beasts, as offerings here. In the sacrifice of battle you yourself shall slay Shumbha and Nishumbha."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"मैंने चण्ड और मुण्ड, इन दो महापशुओं को यहाँ तुम्हें भेंट किया है। युद्धयज्ञ में शुम्भ और निशुम्भ का वध तुम स्वयं करोगी।"

Commentary

Yuddha-yajna, "the sacrifice of battle": the war is framed as a ritual offering, and the demons as the sacrificial animals (pashu).
