पुरा शुम्भनिशुम्भाभ्यामसुराभ्यां शचीपतेः । त्रैलोक्यं यज्ञभागाश्च हृता मदबलाश्रयात् ॥ २ ॥

Translation
Long ago, the asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha, relying on their pride and strength, took the three worlds and the shares of sacrifice from Indra, husband of Shachi.

Commentary
Chapter 5 begins the third and longest episode (uttama charitra, chapters 5–13), presided over by Mahasaraswati. The new enemies are the brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha.
