या श्रीः स्वयं सुकृतिनां भवनेष्वलक्ष्मीः पापात्मनां कृतधियां हृदयेषु बुद्धिः । श्रद्धा सतां कुलजनप्रभवस्य लज्जा तां त्वां नताः स्म परिपालय देवि विश्वम् ॥ ५ ॥

Translation
She who is fortune herself in the homes of the virtuous, misfortune in the homes of the wicked, intelligence in the hearts of the pure-minded, faith in the good, and modesty in the well-born: to you we bow; protect the universe, O Devi.

जो पुण्यात्माओं के घरों में स्वयं लक्ष्मी, पापियों के घरों में दरिद्रता, शुद्ध अंतःकरण वालों के हृदय में बुद्धि, सत्पुरुषों में श्रद्धा और कुलीनों में लज्जा के रूप में रहती हैं, उन आपको हम नमस्कार करते हैं; हे देवि! विश्व का पालन कीजिए।
Commentary
A much-loved verse. The same Devi appears as fortune to the good and misfortune to the wicked: what we receive reflects how we live. She is also intelligence, faith and modesty, the inner qualities that make a good life.
