Durga Saptashati — Chapter 3, Verse 41

Mahishasura Vadha

ततः सोऽपि पदाऽऽक्रान्तस्तया निजमुखात्ततः । अर्धनिष्क्रान्त एवासीद् देव्या वीर्येण संवृतः ॥ ४१ ॥

tataḥ so’pi padā’’krāntastayā nijamukhāttataḥ ardhaniṣhkrānta evāsīd devyā vīryeṇa saṁvṛitaḥ

Translation

Then, pinned under her foot, he began to come out of his own mouth, but was held only half-emerged by the Devi's power.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

तब उनके पैर से दबा होने पर वह अपने मुख से (दूसरे रूप में) बाहर निकलने लगा, पर देवी के प्रभाव से आधा ही निकलकर रुक गया।

Commentary

The demon tries one last escape: his true form emerging from the buffalo's mouth. Iconography often shows this half-emerged figure. Gita Press notes a variant, evati devya.
