Commentary

The Durga Saptashati (also called Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path) forms chapters 81–93 of the Markandeya Purana in commonly printed editions, told by the sage Markandeya to his disciple. It opens with a question of cosmic history: how did Savarni become the Manu, the ruler of a whole world-age? The answer, told over thirteen chapters, is the grace of the Devi.
