Transliteration
Dhyana mantra: Om Shri Santoshi Mahamaya Gajanandam Dayini Shukravar Priye Devi Narayani Namostute Naam mantra: Jai Maa Santoshiye Devi Namo Namah
What the mantra says
Like Santoshi Mata's own worship, this mantra is simple and devotional rather than scholarly, a household prayer in a mix of Sanskrit and Hindi. Line by line:
- Om Shri Santoshi Mahamaya: "Om, Shri Santoshi, great Maya": it names the goddess of contentment as the same great power, Mahamaya, that is worshipped as Durga.
- Gajanandam dayini: "giver of joy to Gajanana", Ganesha, whose daughter she is in tradition.
- Shukravar priye devi: "goddess who loves Friday", her day and the day of her vrat.
- Narayani namostute: "O Narayani, salutations to you". The last words echo the famous Durga Saptashati refrain, placing her among the forms of the one Devi.
When and how to recite it
The mantra belongs to the Friday vrat. After bathing and setting up her picture or a kalash, offer jaggery and roasted chickpeas (gud-chana), light a ghee lamp, and recite the dhyana mantra while picturing her form, seated on a lotus, calm and smiling. Then read the vrat katha and the Santoshi Mata Chalisa, and end with the aarti Jai Santoshi Mata. For japa through the day, the short name mantra Jai Maa Santoshiye Devi Namo Namah is enough.
The one rule of her vrat applies to the mantra too: nothing sour is eaten, cooked or served in the house that Friday. The full step-by-step is in the Santoshi Mata vrat puja vidhi.
