Kartikeya Gayatri Mantra – Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahasenaya

The Gayatri mantra of Kartikeya (Skanda, Murugan), the commander of the gods' army — what each word means, who Skanda is, and how to chant it on Tuesdays and Skanda Shashthi.

Original text

ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे महासेनाय धीमहि। तन्नः स्कन्दः प्रचोदयात्॥

Transliteration

Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahasenaya Dhimahi Tannah Skandah Prachodayat.

Who Kartikeya is

Kartikeya — also Skanda, Kumara, Subrahmanya, Shanmukha and, in Tamil Nadu, Murugan — is the son of Shiva and Parvati and the elder brother of Ganesh in most of North India. He was born to destroy the demon Taraka, who could be killed only by a son of Shiva. Raised by the six Krittikas (the Pleiades), he took six faces to be nursed by all of them, which is why he is Kartikeya and Shanmukha. The gods made him Devasenapati, commander of their army, and he killed Taraka with the vel (spear) given by Parvati. His vehicle is the peacock.

What the mantra means

ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे महासेनाय धीमहि। तन्नः स्कन्दः प्रचोदयात्॥ — "Om, may we know the Supreme Being (Tatpurusha); may we meditate on Mahasena, the great commander; may Skanda inspire us."

  • Tatpurushaya vidmahe — "may we know that Purusha". Tatpurusha is also the name of one of Shiva's five faces; the son is addressed in the father's form.
  • Mahasenaya dhimahi — "may we meditate on the great general", Skanda as Devasenapati.
  • Tannah Skandah prachodayat — "may that Skanda urge us on" — the classic close of a Gayatri, asking the deity to awaken the intellect.

Like every Gayatri it is a prayer for dhi, illumined understanding. Directed to the warrior-god, it asks for strength steered by wisdom — courage that knows where to aim.

How and when to chant

  • Tuesday is Kartikeya's weekly day (he is linked with Mangal); in the south many also observe Fridays.
  • Skanda Shashthi, the sixth day of the bright fortnight, especially the great Soorasamharam festival in Kartik month, and Thaipusam.
  • Morning, facing east, after bathing; offer red flowers and a lamp. Chant 11, 21 or 108 times with a rudraksha or sandalwood mala.

Benefits traditionally associated with it

  • Courage, discipline and focus — the qualities of a commander.
  • Traditionally chanted when Mangal is weak in a chart, since Kartikeya is regarded as Mangal's presiding deity.
  • Victory over obstacles and inner enemies — anger, fear and confusion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Kartikeya Gayatri mantra?

ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे महासेनाय धीमहि। तन्नः स्कन्दः प्रचोदयात्॥ (Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahasenaya Dhimahi, Tannah Skandah Prachodayat).

Is Kartikeya the same as Murugan?

Yes. Murugan is his Tamil name; Subrahmanya, Skanda and Kumara are others.

Why does a Kartikeya mantra say "Tatpurushaya", like Shiva's Gayatri?

Tatpurusha is one of Shiva's five faces and also means the Supreme Being. The son is approached through the father's form, and the second line makes it specific to Skanda.

Which day is best to chant it?

Tuesday, and Skanda Shashthi each month, with Kartik month's Skanda Shashthi as the greatest.

How many times should it be chanted?

108 times is traditional for a daily mala; 11 or 21 is fine for a short practice.
