Original text

Transliteration

Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah. Mangal's verse from the Navagraha Stotra: Dharanigarbhasambhutam vidyutkantisamaprabham. Kumaram shaktihastam tam mangalam pranamamyaham.

Who Mangal is

Mangal, the planet Mars, is one of the nine grahas (Navagraha). He is called Bhauma or Bhumiputra, "son of the Earth," and the mantra addresses him by that name: Bhaumaya Namah, "salutations to the son of Bhumi." In jyotish he governs courage, energy, land and property, brothers, blood and injuries. In temples he is shown red, four-armed and riding a ram.

The two mantras on this page

  • The beej mantra: Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah. Kram, Kreem, Kraum and Sah are seed syllables that are not translated; they carry the graha's energy in sound. The prayer underneath is that this fiery energy turn into courage and disciplined action rather than anger and conflict.
  • The Puranic verse: Mangal's verse from the Navagraha Stotra attributed to Vyasa: "Born from the womb of the Earth, shining like lightning, the youth who holds a spear in his hand: to that Mangal I bow." This is the gentler choice for anyone who prefers a verse of praise to bija syllables.

How to do the japa

  • Day: Tuesday, Mangal's day. Begin on a Tuesday of the bright fortnight.
  • Time: morning after bath.
  • Seat and colour: face south or east on a red asana, wearing red or orange if you like.
  • Mala: red coral (moonga) or red sandalwood is traditional; rudraksha also works. One round is 108.
  • Count: one mala each Tuesday, or daily for 21 or 40 days. Larger counts are usually done through a priest as part of a formal graha shanti.
  • Offerings: red flowers, red sandalwood, jaggery and whole red lentils (masoor). Many people also visit a Hanuman temple on Tuesday, since Hanuman worship is a traditional remedy for Mangal.

A word on Mangal dosha

This mantra is the most common remedy suggested for Mangal (manglik) dosha in marriage matching. Before relying on it, it is worth reading how the dosha is actually judged, including the many conditions under which it is cancelled; our Mangal dosh guide explains this. The mantra is a sound prayer either way, but a decision as large as a marriage should not rest on fear of one placement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Mangal beej mantra?

"Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah." Kram, Kreem and Kraum are Mangal's seed syllables, and Bhauma, "son of the Earth," is his name.

How many times should the Mangal mantra be chanted?

One mala of 108 on Tuesdays is a common practice for households. Larger counts are usually done in a formal graha shanti with a priest.

Does this mantra remove Mangal dosha?

It is the traditional remedy astrologers recommend. Whether the dosha even applies in a chart depends on many cancellation rules, so check that first; the mantra is beneficial either way.

Can women chant the Mangal beej mantra?

Yes. Many manglik women chant it themselves before marriage. If you prefer, the Navagraha Stotra verse for Mangal is a gentle alternative.

Why worship Hanuman for Mangal?

Both are associated with Tuesday, red, strength and courage. Worshipping Hanuman on Tuesdays is one of the most common folk remedies for a troubled Mangal.

Which direction should I face?

South is associated with Mangal; east is also fine for daily japa.
