What Pradosh is
Pradosh means the twilight — the period around sunset. The Pradosh Vrat is kept on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi of both the waxing and waning fortnights, so it falls twice a month. Its heart is not the day but the evening: worship is done in pradosh kaal, roughly the hour and a half around sunset, when, tradition says, Shiva is most easily pleased.
The best-known explanation goes back to the churning of the ocean. When the halahal poison rose and threatened the worlds, Shiva drank it and held it in his throat; the gods, relieved, praised him in the evening of Trayodashi, and Shiva danced before Nandi between his horns. Pradosh worship remembers that evening — the god who takes the world's poison on himself.
Named after the weekday
- Som Pradosh (Monday): especially auspicious, Monday being Shiva's own day; kept for peace of mind and wishes fulfilled.
- Bhaum Pradosh (Tuesday): associated with health and relief from debt.
- Shani Pradosh (Saturday): traditionally kept for children, and for relief in Shani's difficult periods.
- Pradosh on other days is named the same way — Ravi, Budh, Guru, Shukra Pradosh.
How to observe it
- Morning: bathe, take a sankalpa for the vrat before Shiva, and keep a fast through the day — a full fast, or fruit and milk, according to your ability.
- Before sunset: bathe again, wear clean (preferably white) clothes, and prepare the puja place facing north-east.
- In pradosh kaal: worship Shiva-Parvati with Ganesha and Nandi. Offer water, milk and Ganga jal to the Shivling (see Shivling Jalabhishek), then bel patra, white flowers, akshat, chandan, dhoop and a ghee lamp.
- Chant Om Namah Shivaya (a mala of 108), or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, and hear or read the Pradosh vrat katha for that weekday.
- Close with Shiva aarti, Om Jai Shiv Omkara.
- Parana: many people break the fast after the evening puja with simple sattvic food; others break it the next morning. Follow your family's custom.
Rules and cautions
- Do not offer Ketaki flowers, turmeric or kumkum to the Shivling, as in all Shiva worship.
- Avoid grains, salt (in many families), onion, garlic and anger through the day.
- The elderly, the sick and pregnant women can keep a phalahar (fruit) fast or simply do the evening puja — the worship matters more than the fasting.
- Look up the exact Trayodashi and sunset time for your city; pradosh kaal shifts with the season.
