The naam and beej mantras of Rahu, the shadow graha, with his Navagraha Stotra verse — the story of Svarbhanu and the amrit, how to chant on Saturday evenings, the traditional 18,000 count, and what jyotish says Rahu governs.

Transliteration

Naam mantra: Om Ram Rahave Namah. Beej (tantrokta) mantra: Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah. Rahu Gayatri: Om Shirorupaya Vidmahe Amriteshaya Dhimahi Tanno Rahuh Prachodayat. Pranam shloka (from the Navagraha Stotra): Ardhakayam mahaviryam chandradityavimardanam Simhikagarbhasambhutam tam rahum pranamamyaham.

The half-bodied graha

Rahu has no body of his own — he is a chhaya graha, a shadow planet, the moon's north node. The Puranas explain why. At the churning of the ocean, when Mohini was serving amrit to the devas, the asura Svarbhanu slipped into their line disguised as a god. Surya and Chandra recognised him and cried out; Vishnu's Sudarshana chakra cut off his head — but he had already swallowed the amrit, so both halves lived on. The head became Rahu and the body Ketu, and Rahu's grudge is why he "swallows" the sun and moon at eclipses.

His Navagraha Stotra verse says exactly this: "half-bodied, of great might, the tormentor of moon and sun, born from Simhika's womb — to Rahu I bow." Simhika was his mother, which is why he is also called Saimhikeya.

What Rahu governs

In jyotish Rahu is the planet of hunger and obsession: sudden rises and falls, foreign lands and people, technology, politics, illusion and confusion, addictions, and anything unconventional. A well-placed Rahu is associated with bold, unusual success; an afflicted one with anxiety, deception, unexplained fears and long illnesses. Rahu's dasha lasts eighteen years, which is why people facing it often turn to his mantra.

The mantras

(Om Ram Rahave Namah): the short daily mantra; Ram here is Rahu's seed syllable, not Lord Rama's name.
(Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah): for a formal Rahu anushthan, traditionally completed with 18,000 repetitions.

How to chant

  1. Begin on a Saturday; Rahu's japa is traditionally done in the evening or at night rather than the morning.
  2. Sit facing south-west on a dark blanket. Offer blue or dark flowers, a mustard-oil lamp and a little black sesame; recite the pranam shloka.
  3. Chant at least one mala daily; divide 18,000 over the days of a formal anushthan.
  4. Donations on Saturday: black sesame, mustard oil, a blanket, or food for those in need.

Many traditions pair Rahu remedies with Durga or Bhairava worship. Avoid starting new work during the daily Rahu Kaal.

Benefits traditionally associated with it

These are jyotish beliefs, not guaranteed outcomes.

  • Steadier mind during a Rahu mahadasha or antardasha, and relief from unexplained fears.
  • Traditionally suggested for Kaal Sarp yoga and Rahu-related afflictions in a chart.
  • Protection from deception, and clearer judgment in risky, fast-moving work.

Rahu Gayatri mantra

Om Shirorupaya Vidmahe Amriteshaya Dhimahi, Tanno Rahuh Prachodayat.

"May we know him whose form is a head; may we meditate on the lord of amrit; may Rahu inspire us." Both epithets come from the churning of the ocean: Rahu slipped in among the gods and drank the amrit, and Vishnu's discus cut off his head before it went down, so the head became immortal. The same Amriteshaya appears in Ketu's Gayatri, since the body that became Ketu had tasted the amrit too.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Rahu Gayatri mantra?

(Om Shirorupaya Vidmahe Amriteshaya Dhimahi, Tanno Rahuh Prachodayat), usually chanted on Saturdays.

What is the beej mantra of Rahu?

(Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah). The naam mantra is

When should the Rahu mantra be chanted?

Traditionally on Saturdays, in the evening or at night. Begin on a Saturday.

How many times should it be chanted?

One mala daily; a formal anushthan of the beej mantra is 18,000 in total.

Why does Rahu cause eclipses?

Because, in the Puranic story, Surya and Chandra exposed Svarbhanu when he stole the amrit; his head, Rahu, swallows them at eclipse time in revenge.

Is Rahu always malefic?

No. In jyotish a well-placed Rahu can give unusual success and foreign gains. The mantra is chanted to steady his effects, not because he is purely bad.
