Vishnu as Truth
Satyanarayan is Vishnu worshipped as Satya, Truth itself. The vrat is one of the most widely performed pujas in Hindu homes — on Purnima (the full moon), and on any occasion of thanksgiving: griha pravesh, a wedding, a child's birth, a new job or business, recovery from illness. Its katha is traditionally placed in the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana.
The katha in five chapters
- Narada and Vishnu: Narada, grieved by human suffering in Kali Yuga, asks Vishnu for an easy remedy. Vishnu describes the Satyanarayan vrat.
- The poor brahmin and the woodcutter: a poor brahmin of Kashi performs it and prospers; a woodcutter sees him and does the same with what little he has, and is blessed.
- The merchant's broken promise: a merchant, Sadhu, vows to perform the puja if he has a child; his daughter Kalavati is born, but he keeps postponing. Falsely accused while trading abroad, he and his son-in-law are imprisoned.
- The forgotten prasad: released and sailing home, the merchant lies to a disguised Satyanarayan about his cargo, and it turns to leaves. In her joy at his return, Kalavati runs to meet him without taking the prasad, and the boat sinks — until she goes back, takes the prasad, and all is restored.
- King Tungadhwaja: a king who scorned the cowherds' Satyanarayan puja and refused their prasad loses everything, until he humbly performs it himself.
The stories make two points again and again: keep your promise to God, and never disrespect the prasad.
Samagri
- An image of Satyanarayan or Vishnu, a kalash, banana leaves or stems for a small mandap, a red or yellow cloth, a betel leaf and supari.
- Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar), Tulsi leaves, flowers, akshat, roli, dhoop, a ghee lamp.
- Prasad: panjiri (roasted wheat flour or suji with ghee and sugar) or sheera, with bananas and Tulsi; many regions add dry fruit.
Puja vidhi
- Fast through the day (fruit is fine), bathe, and set up the mandap facing east with the kalash.
- Begin with Ganesh puja and the sankalpa, then Navagraha and kalash puja.
- Worship Satyanarayan: bathe the image with panchamrit and water, offer cloth, chandan, flowers, Tulsi, dhoop and lamp.
- Read or hear all five chapters of the katha, with family and neighbours gathered.
- Do the aarti (Om Jai Jagdish Hare is commonly sung), offer the prasad, and distribute it to everyone present — no one should leave without it.
Frequently asked questions
When is Satyanarayan puja done?
Most often on Purnima, and on any happy occasion — griha pravesh, weddings, births, new ventures.
What is the prasad of Satyanarayan katha?
Panjiri or sheera of wheat flour or suji with ghee and sugar, with bananas and Tulsi leaves.

Yes. Many families read the katha themselves; a priest is helpful for the full ritual but not essential.
Why is it important not to refuse the prasad?
The katha's chapters on Kalavati and King Tungadhwaja both teach that disrespecting the prasad brings misfortune.
Where does the Satyanarayan katha come from?
It is traditionally attributed to the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana.
