ज्योतिषामपि तज्ज्योतिस्तमसः परमुच्यते । ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानगम्यं हृदि सर्वस्य विष्ठितम् ॥ १७ ॥
jyotiṣhām api taj jyotis tamasaḥ param uchyate jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ jñāna-gamyaṁ hṛidi sarvasya viṣhṭhitam
Translation
It is the light of all lights, said to be beyond darkness. It is knowledge, the object of knowledge and the goal of knowledge, seated in the heart of every being.
Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
वह ज्योतियों की भी ज्योति है और अंधकार से परे कहा जाता है। वह ज्ञान है, ज्ञेय है और ज्ञान से प्राप्त होने योग्य है, और सबके हृदय में स्थित है।
Commentary
"Light of lights" (jyotisham jyotih) echoes the Brihadaranyaka and Mundaka Upanishads. The sun and fire give light, but awareness is what lets us see any light at all. The verse ends by bringing this cosmic truth home: it lives in the heart of every being (hridi sarvasya).
