PanchakThe Five Nakshatras and What to Avoid

Panchak is the roughly five-day stretch every month when the Moon passes through the last five nakshatras, from Dhanishtha to Revati. Tradition restricts a specific list of activities in it — roofing, southward travel, gathering firewood, making a bed — and names each Panchak by the weekday it begins on.

What Panchak is

"Panchak" means "group of five". The five are the last nakshatras of the zodiac:

  1. Dhanishtha — its second half, which lies in Aquarius
  2. Shatabhisha
  3. Purva Bhadrapada
  4. Uttara Bhadrapada
  5. Revati

Put simply, Panchak is the time the Moon spends in Aquarius and Pisces. The Moon takes about 27.3 days to circle the zodiac, so Panchak comes round every month and lasts a little under five days. Panchangs print its start and end to the minute.

The five things not to do

Unlike Bhadra or Rahu Kaal, Panchak is not a general ban on good work — weddings and other ceremonies are not automatically ruled out. Tradition names specific activities to avoid:

  • Laying a roof ("chhat dalna") or completing a structure — the most widely observed rule.
  • Travelling south, the direction of Yama.
  • Collecting wood, grass or fuel — linked to fire risk, and especially restricted in Dhanishtha.
  • Making a bed or cot ("charpai bunna").
  • Cremation without the prescribed remedy — see below.

The five kinds of Panchak

Panchak is named after the weekday on which it begins, and each name carries its own warning:

Starts onNameTraditional caution
SundayRog PanchakHealth; avoid starting treatments or strenuous undertakings.
MondayRaj PanchakConsidered relatively favourable — good for government or property matters.
TuesdayAgni PanchakFire; avoid construction, machinery and work with fire.
FridayChor PanchakTheft and loss; avoid travel and large transactions.
SaturdayMrityu PanchakThe most serious; avoid risky activities altogether.

Panchak beginning on Wednesday or Thursday has no special name and is generally treated as milder; the five general restrictions still apply.

A death during Panchak

The belief that a death in Panchak may be followed by more deaths in the family is one of the most widely known — and most anxiety-causing — Panchak beliefs. Tradition does not delay the funeral. Instead it prescribes Panchak shanti: five small effigies (putla) of kusha grass or dough are made and cremated with the body, and a shanti ritual is done afterwards. A family priest will arrange this as part of the last rites.

Keeping it in proportion

Panchak recurs every month, so families who build or travel cannot avoid it entirely, and the rules were always specific rather than total. For a construction schedule, plan the roof slab outside Panchak. For other plans, a good day in the panchang with a good choghadiya is enough — with the Panchak list in mind.
