Abujh MuhuratDays So Auspicious They Need No Calculation

An abujh ('unasked') muhurat is a day considered auspicious in itself — Akshaya Tritiya, Vasant Panchami, Devuthani Ekadashi, Vijayadashami and a few others — on which a wedding, griha pravesh or new venture can be begun without consulting the panchang. Here are the main ones, plus the Pushya and siddhi yogas.

What "abujh" means

Abujh (अबूझ) means "not needing to be asked" — a day so auspicious that you need not ask a priest whether it is good. On these days the usual checks of nakshatra, tithi and lagna are traditionally waived for weddings, griha pravesh, starting a business or buying gold, property and vehicles. That is why mass weddings and the busiest jewellery and car sales of the year cluster on them.

The main abujh muhurat days

DayLunar dateUsually falls inWhy it is auspicious

Sade teen muhurat — the "three and a half" of Maharashtra

In Maharashtra and the Deccan, tradition counts three and a half supremely auspicious days: Gudi Padwa (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the new year), Akshaya Tritiya and Vijayadashami as full muhurats, and Bali Pratipada (Diwali Padwa, Kartika Shukla Pratipada) as the half.

Yogas that act like abujh muhurats

  • Guru Pushya yoga — Pushya nakshatra on a Thursday. Pushya is called the king of nakshatras; with Jupiter's day it is the most sought-after day for buying gold, property, and starting studies or business. Not used for weddings — Pushya is traditionally excluded for marriage.
  • Ravi Pushya yoga — Pushya on a Sunday; similar, popular for purchases and taking medicine courses.
  • Sarvartha Siddhi yoga and Amrit Siddhi yoga — fixed combinations of weekday and nakshatra (for example, Sunday with Hasta) that panchangs mark as "accomplishing all aims".

A few honest caveats

  • Abujh is not a licence to ignore everything. Many priests still avoid a wedding on an abujh day if Jupiter or Venus is combust, or if Bhadra or Rahu Kaal covers the hour; they simply choose a clean hour within the day.
  • Lists vary by region. The days above are the most widely recognised; your community may add others, such as Ganga Dussehra or Ram Navami.
  • Kundli milan still matters. An abujh day frees you from date-hunting, not from matching the couple's charts — see Mangal dosh and Nadi dosh.
