Transliteration
Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah. Other common forms: Om Aim Mahasaraswatyai Namah. Om Aim Hreem Shreem Vagdevyai Saraswatyai Namah.
The bija of speech and learning
Aim (ऐं) is Saraswati's seed syllable, the vag-bija or "seed of speech." Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, music, the arts and the spoken word, and the tradition treats this single syllable as her concentrated form. On its own, Aim is counted as Saraswati's one-syllable mantra; Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah, "Om, Aim, salutations to Saraswati," is the form most people chant.
Other forms you will see
- Om Aim Mahasaraswatyai Namah: the same mantra addressing her as Mahasaraswati, the great Saraswati. This name is used especially in Navratri, where Mahasaraswati is worshipped in the last three days.
- Om Aim Hreem Shreem Vagdevyai Saraswatyai Namah: adds the bijas Hreem and Shreem and the name Vagdevi, goddess of speech.
All are traditional. For a student starting out, the short form is easiest to keep steady over 108 counts.
A simple routine for students
- When: in the morning after bath, before you open your books. Vasant Panchami, Saraswati's festival, is the traditional day to begin, but any Thursday or any morning works.
- How: sit facing east, light a lamp before an image of Saraswati or simply before your books, and recite Ya Kundendu Tusharahara Dhavala once to picture her. Then chant the mantra 108 times on a mala, or for ten minutes if you have no mala.
- Exam days: 11 or 21 times before leaving home is enough. The point is to steady the mind, not to delay you.
- White and yellow: Saraswati is pictured in white, and yellow is the colour of Vasant Panchami. White flowers, yellow clothes or a yellow sweet are customary offerings.
The mantra is not a substitute for study. What it does is train attention: the same steady return to a single sound that japa needs is the attention that study needs.
