History
A Vidyapeetha founded on Vijaya Dashami, 1962
The Akhil Bharatiya Sanskrit Sahitya Sammelan founded a Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Delhi on 8 October 1962, with Dr. Mandan Mishra as its director. A separate society, the Akhil Bharatiya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, was formed with Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri as its founder president, and Shastri ji declared that it would be developed into an international institution.
Named after Shastri ji
After his death, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi took over as president and on 2 October 1966 announced that it would be called the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. The Government of India took it over on 1 April 1967, and on 21 December 1970 it became a constituent of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan as the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha.
Deemed University, then Central University
On the UGC's recommendation it was granted Deemed University status in November 1987, Dr. Mandan Mishra became its first Vice-Chancellor in 1989, and it functioned fully as a Deemed University from 1 November 1991. Under the Central Sanskrit Universities Act, 2020 it became a Central University, working as Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University from 30 April 2020.
