History

How it began

Former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, himself a Sanskrit scholar, was keen on an independent Sanskrit university for Maharashtra, with its rich tradition of Sanskrit learning. With his encouragement, Chief Minister Sudhakarrao Naik appointed Dr. Shrikant Jichkar as a one-member committee, whose study report included a draft act for the university. A committee of Sanskrit scholars and educationists followed, and on its report the state government established the university at Ramtek on 18 September 1997, when Manohar Joshi was Chief Minister.

Why Ramtek

Kalidas was hailed as Kavikulaguru, and it is believed that he wrote his poems while at Ramtek — the reason the university was set up there and named after him. The eminent Sanskrit scholar Dr. Pankaj Chande was its founder Vice-Chancellor.
