History
At Sankaracharya's birthplace
The university is named after Sree Sankaracharya, the great exponent of Advaita, and has its headquarters at Kalady, his birthplace, on the banks of the Periyar. It was established in 1993 and constituted under the Sanskrit University Act of 1994 of the Kerala Legislature.
Growth
The UGC recognised it under Section 2(f) in 1993 and 12(B) in 2005. In 2014 it became the first university in Kerala to receive an A grade from NAAC in its first cycle, and in 2021 it was reaccredited with A+. Most of its eight regional campuses are in rural areas, and the university reports that more than seventy percent of its students are women.
