श्रीभगवानुवाच । इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम् । विवस्वान्मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत् ॥ १ ॥
śhrī bhagavān uvācha imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam vivasvān manave prāha manur ikṣhvākave ’bravīt
Translation
The Blessed Lord said: I taught this imperishable yoga to Vivasvan (the sun god); Vivasvan taught it to Manu, and Manu told it to Ikshvaku.

श्रीभगवान बोले: मैंने इस अविनाशी योग को सूर्यदेव विवस्वान से कहा था; विवस्वान ने इसे मनु से कहा, और मनु ने राजा इक्ष्वाकु से कहा।
Commentary
Krishna reveals that the teaching he is giving Arjun is not new. It began with Vivasvan, the sun, passed to Manu, father of humanity, and to Ikshvaku, founder of the solar dynasty — the line into which Shri Ram was later born. The Gita presents itself as ancient wisdom being renewed.
