Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 17, Verse 5

Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga

aśhāstra-vihitaṁ ghoraṁ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ dambhāhankāra-sanyuktāḥ kāma-rāga-balānvitāḥ

Translation

Those who perform fierce austerities not prescribed by scripture, full of hypocrisy and ego, driven by the force of desire and attachment,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Krishna warns against extreme self-torture presented as spirituality. Fasting to the point of harm, or painful practices done to impress or to gain power, come not from devotion but from dambha and ahankara, hypocrisy and ego. The sentence finishes in the next verse.
