Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 17, Verse 4

Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga

yajante sāttvikā devān yakṣha-rakṣhānsi rājasāḥ pretān bhūta-gaṇānśh chānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ

Translation

The sattvic worship the gods; the rajasic worship yakshas and rakshasas; and the others, the tamasic, worship ghosts and hosts of spirits.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The object of worship reveals the worshipper. Sattvic people are drawn to the luminous gods. Rajasic people turn to yakshas and rakshasas, powers associated with wealth and might. Tamasic people turn to ghosts and spirits, often out of fear. It is a mirror: what we seek from the divine shows what we value most.
