Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 17, Verse 2

Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha tri-vidhā bhavati śhraddhā dehināṁ sā svabhāva-jā sāttvikī rājasī chaiva tāmasī cheti tāṁ śhṛiṇu

Translation

The Blessed Lord said: The faith of embodied beings, born of their own nature, is of three kinds: sattvic, rajasic and tamasic. Hear about it.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Krishna's answer shifts the focus from whether someone follows the rules to what kind of faith they have. Faith is svabhava-ja, "born of one's nature": shaped by one's tendencies and past. Everyone has faith of some kind; the question is its quality.
