अर्जुन उवाच । ये शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः । तेषां निष्ठा तु का कृष्ण सत्त्वमाहो रजस्तमः ॥ १ ॥
arjuna uvācha ye śhāstra-vidhim utsṛijya yajante śhraddhayānvitāḥ teṣhāṁ niṣhṭhā tu kā kṛiṣhṇa sattvam āho rajas tamaḥ
Translation
Arjun said: O Krishna, what is the standing of those who set aside the rules of scripture but worship with faith? Is it sattva, rajas or tamas?

अर्जुन बोले: हे कृष्ण! जो लोग शास्त्र-विधि को छोड़कर श्रद्धा से युक्त होकर पूजा करते हैं, उनकी स्थिति कैसी है? सात्त्विक, राजसी या तामसी?
Commentary
Chapter 17, Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga, "the yoga of the threefold division of faith," begins with a thoughtful question prompted by 16.23–24. Many sincere people worship without knowing the scriptures in detail. Are they on the same footing as those who reject scripture out of desire? Arjun asks Krishna to judge faith by the gunas of chapter 14.
