अभिसन्धाय तु फलं दम्भार्थमपि चैव यत् । इज्यते भरतश्रेष्ठ तं यज्ञं विद्धि राजसम् ॥ १२ ॥
abhisandhāya tu phalaṁ dambhārtham api chaiva yat ijyate bharata-śhreṣhṭha taṁ yajñaṁ viddhi rājasam
Translation
But sacrifice offered with an eye on the reward, or for the sake of show, know that to be rajasic, O best of the Bharatas.

परंतु हे भरतश्रेष्ठ! जो यज्ञ फल को ध्यान में रखकर, अथवा दिखावे के लिए किया जाता है, उसे तुम राजस जानो।
Commentary
Rajasic worship has two motives: getting something (phala) or being seen (dambha). Both turn worship into a means for something else. The ritual may look identical to the sattvic one; the motive makes the difference.
