Commentary

Chapter 14, Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga, "the yoga of distinguishing the three gunas," follows directly from 13.21, where attachment to the gunas was named as the cause of rebirth. Now Krishna explains what the three gunas are, how they bind, how to recognise them, and how to rise above them. He calls it "the best of all knowledge" because it is so practical: it helps one read one's own mind from moment to moment.
