निमित्तानि च पश्यामि विपरीतानि केशव । न च श्रेयोऽनुपश्यामि हत्वा स्वजनमाहवे ॥ ३१ ॥
nimittāni cha paśhyāmi viparītāni keśhava na cha śhreyo ’nupaśhyāmi hatvā sva-janam āhave
Translation
I see only ill omens, O Keshav, and I see no good in killing my own kinsmen in battle.
Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
हे केशव! मुझे केवल विपरीत (अशुभ) लक्षण दिखाई दे रहे हैं, और युद्ध में अपने ही स्वजनों को मारकर मुझे कोई कल्याण नहीं दिखता।
Commentary
Arjun moves from physical symptoms to reasons. He sees bad omens and can find no "good" (shreyas) in the outcome. The word shreyas — the truly beneficial, as opposed to the merely pleasant — will become central to the Gita; here Arjun uses it before he understands what it really means.
