Maa Kali Puja VidhiSimple Home Worship and Kali Puja Night

A calm, sattvik way to worship Maa Kali at home: on Amavasya, Tuesdays and Saturdays, the seventh night of Navratri and Kali Puja night. What to gather, the order of the puja, the mantra, chalisa, stotra and aarti, and what to leave to initiated worship.

Worship her as the Mother

Kali's image is fierce, but in household worship she is approached exactly as any form of the Mother is: with cleanliness, a lamp, flowers and a calm, trusting mind. The tantric forms of her worship, with their special mantras, timings and offerings, belong to initiation under a qualified guru. This vidhi is the simple, sattvik home puja that anyone can do.

When to do it

  • Kali Puja (Shyama Puja): the new moon of Kartik, Diwali night, in Bengal, Assam and Odisha. The puja is done at night (nishita).
  • Navratri: the seventh night, dedicated to Kalaratri.
  • Amavasya of every month.
  • Tuesdays and Saturdays for regular worship, usually after dusk.

What you will need

  • A picture of Maa Kali (Dakshina Kali), or of Durga if you have no Kali image
  • A red cloth to seat the picture
  • A mustard-oil or ghee lamp, incense and camphor
  • Red hibiscus (jaba), her favourite flower, or other red flowers
  • Kumkum, sindoor, akshat
  • A coconut, fruit and a simple sweet; in Bengal, sweets and khichuri are common
  • A rudraksha or red sandalwood mala

Step by step

  1. Prepare. Bathe, wear clean clothes (red or black are traditional for Kali), and clean the puja place. Sit facing east or north.
  2. Ganesh first. Offer a flower to Ganesha so that the puja is free of obstacles.
  3. Sankalpa. With water, akshat and a flower in your right hand, state your name and intention: for protection, courage, freedom from fear, or simply devotion. Let the water fall.
  4. Install and invite. Seat the picture on the red cloth, sprinkle a little Gangajal, and silently invite the Mother to be present.
  5. Dhyana. Picture her as the Kalikashtakam describes: dark, smiling, her right hands granting boons and fearlessness.
  6. Offer. Kumkum and sindoor, then red hibiscus flowers one by one, then akshat.
  7. Lamp and incense. Light the mustard-oil or ghee lamp and show incense.
  8. Naivedya. Offer the coconut, fruit and sweet.
  9. Mantra. Chant Om Kreem Kalikayai Namah 108 times on the mala.
  10. Path. Read the Kali Chalisa and, if you can, the Kalikashtakam.
  11. Aarti. Sing Ambe Tu Hai Jagdambe Kali with the camphor lamp and the bell.
  12. Close. Ask forgiveness for any mistake, offer your fears to her in your own words, bow, and share the prasad.

Things to keep in mind

  • Keep it sattvik at home. Offerings like meat or alcohol belong only to particular temple and tantric traditions, not to household worship.
  • Long bija mantras need a guru. For daily devotion, the name mantra, chalisa and stotra are complete.
  • Approach with love, not fear. Her fierceness is directed at what harms her devotees. Her devotees, from Ramprasad to Sri Ramakrishna, called her simply "Ma".
