Worship the guardian, simply
Bhairav has a fearsome reputation, and some of his temple worship is tantric. But household worship of Bhairav is simple and sattvik, and it is very old: families across North India light a lamp for Bhairav Baba as their protector without any special initiation. Think of him the way his devotees in Kashi do, as the Kotwal who keeps watch over you. Read more about him on the Kaal Bhairav page.
When to do it
- Kalashtami: Krishna Paksha Ashtami every month, in the evening or at night.
- Kaal Bhairav Jayanti (Bhairav Ashtami): the Kalashtami of Margashirsha.
- Sundays and Tuesdays, for regular worship.
- Times of fear, bad dreams, enemies, court cases, or when beginning a journey.
What you will need
- A picture of Kaal Bhairav or Batuk Bhairav. A Shiva linga can also be used, since he is Shiva's form.
- A clay or brass lamp with four wicks (chaumukh deepak) and mustard oil.
- Incense, sindoor, black sesame seeds, whole urad dal.
- Blue or dark flowers (aparajita), or any available flowers.
- Prasad: imarti or jalebi, sweet rotis, or urad pakoras. Coconut and fruit are also fine.
- A little extra food set aside for a dog.
Step by step
- After sunset, bathe and wear clean clothes. Darker colours are common for Bhairav, but anything clean is fine.
- Remember Ganesh and then Shiva. Bhairav is worshipped as Shiva's own form.
- Sankalp. Hold water, akshat and a flower, say your name and your prayer (for protection, courage, or freedom from a specific fear), and release it.
- Offerings. Apply sindoor to his image, and offer black sesame, urad, flowers and incense.
- Light the chaumukh lamp with mustard oil. The Bhairav Aarti itself says its darshan removes everyone's sorrow.
- Mantra. Chant Om Kalabhairavaya Namah 108 times on a rudraksha mala.
- Stotra and chalisa. Recite the Kalabhairava Ashtakam and the Bhairav Chalisa.
- Bhog. Offer the prasad.
- Aarti. Sing Jai Bhairav Deva, waving the lamp.
- Feed a dog. Give part of the prasad, or a roti with a little oil or ghee, to a dog, ideally a black one. The dog is his vahana, and this is the step most families never skip.
- Kshama prarthana and pranam.
The Kalashtami fast
Many devotees fast on Kalashtami, taking fruit, milk or one sattvik meal, and keep the fast until after the night puja. Some break it the same night after feeding the dog, others the next morning. See the Kalashtami Vrat guide for the full rules.
What to leave to temples and gurus
- Liquor offerings, as at the Kaal Bhairav temple in Ujjain, are a temple custom from tantric worship. Don't copy them at home.
- Bija and tantric mantras of Bhairav, and cremation-ground or midnight sadhanas, need a guru. The name mantra is complete on its own.
- Don't treat Bhairav worship as a way to harm someone else. He is prayed to as a protector.
Frequently asked questions
Can Kaal Bhairav be worshipped at home?
Yes, with simple sattvik puja: a mustard-oil lamp, flowers, his mantra, chalisa, ashtakam and aarti. Tantric forms of worship are left to temples and initiated practitioners.
When is Kalashtami?
Every month on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha, the waning moon. The Kalashtami of Margashirsha is Kaal Bhairav Jayanti.
Why is mustard oil used for Bhairav's lamp?
Mustard oil is traditionally associated with the protective, fierce deities, Bhairav and Shani among them. The aarti specifically mentions oil as his offering.
What prasad does Bhairav like?
Imarti, jalebi, sweet rotis and urad dishes are traditional. Coconut and fruit are also offered.
Why should a dog be fed after the puja?
The dog is Bhairav's vahana. Feeding a dog, especially a black one, is treated as serving Bhairav himself.
Should I worship Kaal Bhairav or Batuk Bhairav at home?
Either. Batuk Bhairav, the child form, is gentler and very popular for household worship; Kaal Bhairav is worshipped especially on Kalashtami. The same puja works for both.
Is it true that Bhairav must be visited after Vaishno Devi?
Yes, by tradition the Vaishno Devi yatra is completed with darshan at the Bhairon Nath temple above the shrine.
