यं यं वापि स्मरन्भावं त्यजत्यन्ते कलेवरम् । तं तमेवैति कौन्तेय सदा तद्भावभावितः ॥ ६ ॥
yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran bhāvaṁ tyajatyante kalevaram taṁ tam evaiti kaunteya sadā tad-bhāva-bhāvitaḥ
Translation
Whatever state of being one remembers when finally leaving the body, O son of Kunti, to that state one goes, having always been absorbed in it.

हे कौन्तेय! मनुष्य अंतकाल में जिस-जिस भाव को स्मरण करता हुआ शरीर त्यागता है, वह उसी-उसी को प्राप्त होता है, क्योंकि वह सदा उसी भाव से भावित रहा है।
Commentary
The key phrase is sadā tad-bhāva-bhāvitaḥ — "always absorbed in that state." Our last thought is not random; it is the natural outcome of what we have thought about most throughout life. The famous story of King Bharata, reborn as a deer because he died thinking of a deer, illustrates this.
