Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 4, Verse 29

अपाने जुह्वति प्राणं प्राणेऽपानं तथापरे । प्राणापानगती रुद्ध्वा प्राणायामपरायणाः ॥ २९ ॥

apāne juhvati prāṇaṁ prāṇe ’pānaṁ tathāpare prāṇāpāna-gatī ruddhvā prāṇāyāma-parāyaṇāḥ

Translation

Others offer the outgoing breath into the incoming, and the incoming into the outgoing; restraining the course of both, they are devoted to pranayama.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

अन्य योगी अपान वायु में प्राण वायु का और प्राण वायु में अपान वायु का हवन करते हैं; तथा अन्य प्राण और अपान की गति को रोककर प्राणायाम में तत्पर रहते हैं।

Commentary

Breath-regulation (prāṇāyāma) as sacrifice. The practices described — inhalation, exhalation and retention — are the foundations of the pranayama taught in yoga traditions to this day.
