आश्चर्यवत्पश्यति कश्चिदेन माश्चर्यवद्वदति तथैव चान्यः । आश्चर्यवच्चैनमन्यः शृणोति श्रुत्वाप्येनं वेद न चैव कश्चित् ॥ २९ ॥
āśhcharya-vat paśhyati kaśhchid enan āśhcharya-vad vadati tathaiva chānyaḥ āśhcharya-vach chainam anyaḥ śhṛiṇoti śhrutvāpyenaṁ veda na chaiva kaśhchit
Translation
Someone sees the self as a wonder; another speaks of it as a wonder; another hears of it as a wonder — and even after hearing, no one truly knows it.

कोई इस आत्मा को आश्चर्य की तरह देखता है, कोई इसका आश्चर्य की तरह वर्णन करता है, कोई इसे आश्चर्य की तरह सुनता है — और सुनकर भी कोई इसे वास्तव में नहीं जानता।
Commentary
Krishna pauses to acknowledge how hard this teaching is. The self is āśhcharyavat — a marvel — because it is the one thing that is always present yet never seen as an object. Hearing about it is not the same as knowing it; this prepares for the shift to practice (yoga) later in the chapter.
