Translation
One who thinks this self is a slayer, and one who thinks it is slain — neither understands. It neither kills nor is killed.

जो इस आत्मा को मारने वाला समझता है और जो इसे मरा हुआ मानता है — वे दोनों नहीं जानते। यह न मारता है, न मारा जाता है।
Commentary
This verse closely echoes the Katha Upanishad (1.2.19), showing how the Gita draws on the older Upanishadic tradition. Its point is that both pride ("I killed") and grief ("he was killed") rest on the same mistake: identifying the self with the body.
