Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 16, Verse 21

Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga

tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśhanam ātmanaḥ kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet

Translation

Desire, anger and greed: these three are the gates of hell, destroyers of the self. Therefore one should give up all three.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

After the long description, Krishna reduces the demonic nature to three roots: kama (desire), krodha (anger) and lobha (greed). This is one of the Gita's most quoted verses. Desire unfulfilled becomes anger (as 2.62–63 showed); desire fulfilled becomes greed for more. Guarding these three gates is a complete practical discipline.
