Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 16, Verse 17

Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga

ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ yajante nāma-yajñais te dambhenāvidhi-pūrvakam

Translation

Self-important, stubborn, intoxicated with wealth and pride, they perform sacrifices in name only, with hypocrisy and without following the proper way.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Nama-yajna, "sacrifice in name only," describes religion used as a display: large donations with one's name carved on them, grand rituals for reputation. The problem is not the ritual but dambha, the pretence behind it.
