Commentary
The Sanskrit says Arjun is "possessed" (āviṣhṭa) by compassion — it has seized him rather than being chosen. Commentators distinguish this from true compassion: it is attachment to his own people wearing the face of kindness. This is the beginning of the despair (viṣhāda) that gives the chapter its name.
