Then conches and kettledrums, tabors, drums and horns all sounded at once, and the noise was tremendous.

Commentary
The whole Kaurava army joins Bhishma's signal. Sanjay describes the sound as tumultuous — an overwhelming noise, impressive in volume but with no named hero behind it. The contrast with the next verses, where each Pandava conch is named individually, is deliberate.
