Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 17, Verse 8

Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga

āyuḥ-sattva-balārogya-sukha-prīti-vivardhanāḥ rasyāḥ snigdhāḥ sthirā hṛidyā āhārāḥ sāttvika-priyāḥ

Translation

Foods that promote long life, clarity, strength, health, happiness and satisfaction, that are juicy, smooth, substantial and pleasing to the heart, are dear to the sattvic.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Sattvic food is described by its effects first: it lengthens life and brings clarity, strength, health and contentment. Only then come its qualities: juicy, smooth (snigdha, often meaning containing good fats like ghee), nourishing and agreeable. This became the foundation of the "sattvic diet" in Ayurveda and yoga.
