Commentary
This verse states one of the Gita's central metaphysical claims plainly: the individual soul isn't separate in kind from the divine, but a fragment (amsha) of it, temporarily caught up in the struggle of embodied life. It's often paired with 2.20 as a two-part account of the soul — eternal and indestructible on one hand, yet genuinely entangled with mind and senses in its embodied state on the other.
